We are excited to announce our annual seminar at Gonzaga University School of Law! This CLE will address challenging aspects of criminal defense and give defenders practical ways to handle those issues:

  •  Cindy Arends Elsberry will lead a discussion with panelists on hot button issues that arise when criminal defenders represent clients with mental illness and intellectual disability;
  • Following the panel on mental impairment, Cindy will talk about the importance of maintaining the health of the defender community:  recognizing, preventing and addressing burn out.
  •  D’Adre Cunningham will look at aspects of criminal law and practice tips related to reduce parent-child separation when a parent is charged with a crime, both before trial and after sentencing.
  •  Cindy Arends Elsberry will cover changes in criminal law for youth and young adults, including application of State v. O’Dell and St v. Houston-Sconiers.
  •  Kevin Griffin, Brian Raymon and Jeremy Schmidt will explore the legal and practical sides of using demonstrative aids during voir dire.
  •   Lauren McLane, Charles Allen and Michelle Hess will explain how the Washington State Patrol’s newest breath test machine, the Draeger, works and how to use that information in suppression motions and during cross examination of the technician.

The program promises to be timely and informative, and a great way for WDA to connect with it's members in Eastern Washington. It will take place on November 3rd between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM at Gonzaga University School of Law, 712 N. Cincinnati St., Spokane, WA. To register, email with "Gonzaga" in the subject line. Space is limited, so register today!
