City of Olympia Seeks Contract Public Defender

DESCRIPTION:

The City of Olympia is accepting applications for one contract public defender to represent indigent defendants in the Olympia Municipal Court. Olympia is seeking a 150 case credit max position with assignment to Olympia’s Community Court, one afternoon first appearance in custody calendar per week, and possibly a small misdemeanor/gross misdemeanor case load if credits allow. An option for additional case credits may be possible in 2024. Applicants must be a member in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association with a minimum of one year of criminal defense experience. Experience handling public defense cases is preferred. Experience in therapeutic courts is preferred but not necessary.

Contract period for this position runs from 4/15/24 through 12/31/24, with a possible option to renew. The flat rate monthly compensation is anticipated to be based on the following scale: 150 case credits/year=$52,500

Public Defenders in Olympia are paid a flat rate monthly. Billing is not required.

Public defender must be able to meet caseload standards and quarterly certification. Public defenders work closely with the Public Defense Coordinator. Caseload tracking and reporting to the city is required.
