Timely and Critical Criminal Justice Reforms for Washington’s youth: E2SSB 6160 Changes Decline and Auto Decline Statutes (effective June 7, 2018)

Last week Governor Inslee signed E2SSB 6160, a bill that dramatically changes the auto-decline, discretionary decline and mandatory decline statutes.  This legislation improved how Washington treats children involved in the criminal justice system. This bill did not go as far as the defender community hoped, but it is a big improvement and a victory for the many youth who will have their cases remain in juvenile court where they belong, allowing them to receive developmentally appropriate rehabilitation services rather than have the focus on punishment.
