2018 Annual Ethics C...

2018 Annual Ethics CLE and WDA’s 35th Anniversary Banquet
This ethics program is designed to provide defenders across practice areas with thoughtful and nuanced ethical guidance and enhanced skill development. Our faculty consists of experienced public defense trial attorneys, judicial leaders and experts in the field of legal ethics from the Washington State Bar Association and Seattle University School of Law. We will explore the ways that racial bias and public defense independence impact our ethical obligations to our clients.  And our curriculum will cover issues of client confidentiality and defender’s ethical and 6th amendment obligations from the very beginning of our interactions with our clients throughout the life of their cases and involvement in the criminal justice system.

We will also be celebrating Washington Defender Association’s 35th anniversary.

Established in October 1983, WDA has been honored to advocate for public defenders and their clients through training, policy work and technical assistance for the past 35 years. We have grown from a small handful of lawyers to over 1500 members that include the spectrum of public defense roles.  From the development of standards for public defense services to the establishment of the State Office of Public Defense and the WSBA Council on Public Defense, WDA has been at the forefront of reform efforts to ensure that the justice system treats low income people and disadvantaged communities with equality and respect.  We are honored to have Chief Justice Fairhurst and Lt. Gov. Habib as our luncheon guests and hope you will join us in this recognition of WDA and our members’ work.
