2020 Criminal Defense Training Academy

OPD will present the Criminal Defense Training Academy (CDTA), which provides fundamental skills development for attorneys who represent indigent defendants in adult criminal cases. Applications are due by Wednesday, April 1. OPD will notify applicants by April 8 whether they have been selected to participate.

The CDTA is a skills building training program designed for attorneys who are new to public defense. Over four days (May 15-16 and October 2-3) at Spokane Community College, the selected class members will engage in highly interactive exercises designed to refine their skills and techniques. For example, we will practice interviewing difficult clients, cross examining law enforcement officers, and articulating objections at trial.

Only 36 attorneys will be selected to participate.
 All attorneys working in public defense are welcome to apply, but selection priority will be given to those who are:

  1. New to public defense practice;
  2. From geographic locations that typically lack CLE opportunities; and
  3. Committed to engaging in an interactive learning environment.
