Strength at Home

Strength at Home
The Strength at Home intervention program for those who use intimate partner violence (IPV) is a patient-centered, trauma-informed, evidence-based intervention. Data from several studies of military veterans, including randomized controlled trials, indicate that the program is effective in reducing various forms of IPV. As a result, program has been fully implemented across the entire VA healthcare system, the largest healthcare system in the United States. Emerging research in civilian samples of those who use IPV likewise suggests that the program is effective.
Strength at Home groups are conducted with up to 10 clients per group and consist of 12 sessions. Material focuses on education on trauma and abuse and taking responsibility for abusive behavior, conflict management skills to deescalate difficult situations, assertiveness training, and communication skills. Elements of motivational interviewing are incorporated as clients typically need help in recognizing their need to change and developing personal goals. Sessions are weekly for two hours. Session topics include:

• Introduction and Welcoming
• Trauma and Relationships
• Conflict Management I: Understanding Anger
• Conflict Management II: Time Outs
• Coping Strategies I: Anger-related Thinking
• Coping Strategies II: Dealing with Stress
• Communication Skills I: Roots of Your Communication Style
• Communication Skills II: Active Listening
• Communication Skills III: Assertive Messages
• Communication Skills IV: Expressing Feelings
• Communication Skills V: Common Communication Traps
• Reviewing Treatment Gains and Planning for Future

A study funded by the Washington State Department of Commerce is being conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of court-referred interventions to help prevent violence in relationships. Participants will be randomly chosen to take part in one of two programs:

(1) The Strength at Home program that is designed to offer specialized support to prevent violence in relationships OR
(2) A standard domestic violence intervention program.

If you choose to participate, you will refer defendants to us for enrollment in a reduced cost IPV intervention program.
