Salary: $109,455.00 – $138,740.00

Who May ApplyThis special duty recruitment is open internally to all current Department of Public Defense career service employees. Applicants must have approval from their current supervisor to accept this acting assignment. Qualified members of the public may apply for consideration as term-limited temporary employees, but first consideration will be given to current employees. This position is anticipated to be two years in length

Job Duties

  • Manage and administer DPD’s training program in collaboration and consultation with Policy Directors, Managing Attorneys and division staff
  • Identify training needs for all practice areas and organize trainings that respond to those needs
  • Make recommendations and organizational assessment with an eye toward equity across the department
  • Supervise the development and maintenance of annual training calendar
  • Coordinate annual new attorney training
  • Arrange for trainings by local and national practitioners
  • Supervise Administrator I; assign duties and responsibilities; review completed work; train, mentor and evaluate staff performance.
  • Represent DPD on a local and national level with colleges and other relevant public defense community organizations. Maintain relationships with the public defense community outside of DPD, including with WDA and WACDL
  • Support DPD staff who put on department-wide trainings
  • Seek out DPD staff with unique skill sets or experiences and encourage corresponding CLE presentations
  • Ensure appropriate MCLE credits and CEU credits for training
  • Organize and maintain training section of collaborative Sharepoint site, including:
    • Posting training materials to collaborative Sharepoint site
  • Coordinate summer internship program including, but not limited to:
    • Cultivate relationships with law schools, design and implement a law student recruitment strategy, to ensure quality and diverse intern pool
    • Coordinate DPD attendance at job fairs, including recruiting and selecting DPD attorneys to attend fairs
    • In collaboration with HR, review intern applications and coordinate interview panels for summer interns
    • Make internship offers and place interns in divisions and case areas
    • Ensure that interns gain appropriate experience and that interns have appropriate supervision
    • Coordinate evaluations of interns
    • Conduct exit interviews with interns
  • Ensure On Call Attorney Manual is kept up to date
  • Participate in community engagement activities and coordinate a strategy for community engagement, for example relationships with local high schools, in consultation with policy directors
  • Other duties as assigned
