Kitsap County Office of Public Defense Seeks Bids for Criminal and Juvenile Arraignment/Coverage Attorney

The Kitsap County Office of Public Defense is now accepting bids for 2021 for a full-time criminal and juvenile arraignment/coverage attorney.

This position entails covering the following courtroom calendars for public defense cases:

Monday – Friday 9:00 criminal in-custody case calendar
Monday – Thursday 10:30 criminal out-of-custody case calendar
Friday 11:00 after sentencing calendar
Monday- Friday 1:30 p.m. out-of-custody dui and dv “returns” (arraignments for certain District court cases)
Monday-Friday 3:00 felony arraignment calendar
Tuesdays 1:30 juvenile arraignment calendar

The morning responsibilities entail the attorney to remain in court throughout the entirety of each morning’s calendar and provide coverage for attorneys who either work for the office of public defense or have contracts with the office of public defense to provide public defense representation.  The attorney must also handle any out of custody arraignments on the 10:30 calendar and obtain client information as is done for the in-custody felony cases.  Other obligations that arise intermittently on the morning calendars involve warrant returns, bench warrant quashes, and probation violations.

The afternoon responsibilities include out of custody dui and domestic violence-related arraignments in Kitsap County District Court at 1:30.

The afternoon felony arraignment calendar involves out of court preparation including reviewing all charging documents that afternoon between 1:45 and 2:30 for probable cause and meeting with the defendants being arraigned in jail video at 2:30 in order to obtain basic client information from each of them.  In addition, the attorney will also provide coverage for attorneys whose clients have been picked up on arrest warrants and are seen on this afternoon calendar for case settings before their attorneys often have notice of their custody status or court date.
