As part of the recently formed Immigration Defense Unit, the attorney will focus on detained removal defense, carry a large caseload, and work in a fast paced and supportive environment. The attorney will provide direct representation for detained non-citizens facing removal in the San Francisco Immigration Court. The attorney may periodically file suit in federal district court, handle some consultation requests from criminal defense attorneys about immigration consequences of criminal charges pursuant to Padilla v. Kentucky, and other duties as required.
The attorney will be part of a collaborative team of 8 attorneys and 5 support staff, and be on the cutting edge of advancing due process and access to counsel in today’s immigration courts. Immigration Defense Unit attorneys do not screen clients prior to accepting them for representation. Instead, attorneys select certain days to appear in court, and then offer representation for all unrepresented detainees on the docket that day.
