The Washington Appellate Project is hiring a staff attorney. The Washington Appellate Project is a nonprofit public defense firm of 15 attorneys providing the highest quality representation to indigent clients appealing criminal convictions, civil commitments and termination of parental rights throughout the State of Washington. Our office’s lawyers appear before the Washington Court of Appeals, the Washington Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. We place a high value on collaboration and creative client-centered advocacy. Our attorneys have won numerous cases reshaping Washington’s criminal justice and family defense systems to address racial and economic disparity. These include cases invalidating Washington’s Death Penalty, striking down Washington’s drug possession statute, bringing about juvenile justice reforms, and limiting financial penalties.
Qualifications include superior written and oral advocacy skills, a strong commitment to working with low-income individuals and marginalized communities, and a commitment to criminal and racial justice. The expected start date will be May 1, 2022. Candidates must be eligible at the time of employment for admission to the Washington Bar pursuant to Washington Admission to Practice Rule 3.
Attorney salaries range from $78,000 to $108,000. Initial salary will depend on experience. Benefits include health insurance and employer sponsored IRA plan with employer contribution, and a generous paid time off policy. Attorneys generally work in the office with a degree flexibility to work remotely when appropriate.
Our office is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive community. The Washington Appellate project encourages applications from all qualified individuals, including people of color, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, people with fluency in more than one language, veterans, people from low-income backgrounds, and people directly impacted by the criminal legal system.
