US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Seeks Federal Public Defender (Central District of California)

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit is accepting applications for the position of Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California.

This leadership position offers a unique opportunity to direct one of the nation’s largest and most respected federal defender organizations, serving individuals who are unable to afford counsel in federal criminal proceedings. The office manages an annual budget of approximately $58 million and includes more than 230 employees across locations in Los Angeles, Santa Ana, and Riverside.

The current annual salary is $197,200. The term of office is four years, with potential for appointment to successive terms.

Qualified applicants must have at least ten years of criminal law experience, strong leadership abilities, and a demonstrated commitment to public service and equal justice.

Interested candidates should submit a completed application, resume or CV, law school transcripts, state bar certifications of good standing, and any optional letters of reference no later than July 20, 2026.
