Investigating DNA Cases
Understanding the law and science related to DNA is crucial for both lawyers and investigators working in public defense. This webinar, presented by members of the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab and attorneys with the Washington Innocence Project, will give an overview of DNA science. Topics include different sources of DNA, the basics of Transfer & Touch, DNA Persistence and Degradation, DNA collection methods, and DNA sampling issues. The presenters will also address DNA preservation orders, postconviction issues that may arise when defending clients in a cases that involve DNA, and RCW 43.43.754, the DNA testing statute. Defense attorneys and investigators will leave this webinar better able to understand the science and law of DNA and how to use it to defend their clients.
