Public Benefits 101
Public Benefits 101

Date: 5/26

Time: 12pm – 1pm

Criminal cases and incarceration can negatively impact or terminate public benefits individuals receive as financial assistance from the government. Public defenders will learn about how federal public benefits through Social Security are awarded and understand when benefits are temporarily and permanently terminated. Practice tips on how attorneys can help clients navigate their benefits will be shared. Finally, public defenders will understand how certain funds issues by the court, from legal financial obligation reimbursements due to State v. Blake and civil contempt fines awarded to clients under the forensically competency delays in Trueblood, will be discussed in terms of potential impact to public benefits. Presented by Peter Grieser, Legal Director of the Benefits Law Center.
