Ricky’s law is Washington’s new civil commitment statute for involuntary treatment of substance use disorders. The law was imported into the existing civil commitment statute for mental health disorders, however, there are clinical, procedural, and legal differences the practitioner should be aware of. This CLE will cover the basics of Ricky’s law, common legal issues, the limitations to involuntary treatment facilities, and how to advise clients.
