This CLE will provide legislative updates related to youth charged with crimes. The presentation will focus on HB 1394, which substantially limits the circumstances under which clients will be required to register as a sex offender for crimes committed as youth, as well as providing new grant opportunities to expand treatment options. The CLE will explain the application of the law—what it means for your clients currently facing charges and what it means for clients with past sex offense convictions. It will also explain how the changes will impact defenders’ work representing clients on failure to register charges. While the CLE will largely focus on HB 1394, it will also address other legislative changes, such as new limits on LFOs that can be collected in Juvenile Court and changes the way juvenile court adjudications are scored under the SRA. 1 Legal Credit is Requested. Please register via Eventbrite here.
Presenters: Katie Hurley (KC DPD); Karen Pillar (TeamChild); George Yeannakis and Liz Mustin (WA State OPD)
