Case Description:
Mr. Gregory was first convicted and sentenced to death in 2001 for the rape and murder of 43-year-old Geneine Harshfield. Having previously upheld Allen Eugene Gregory’s conviction for aggravated first degree murder, this case brought forth several statutory and constitutional challenges to Gregory’s death penalty sentence.

Opinion:
The Washington Supreme Court decided State v. Gregory on October 11, 2018. The court decided that the death penalty, as administered in Washington, fails to serve any legitimate penological goal; thus, it violates article I, section 14 of the Washington constitution.
